Investigating Effects of Implementing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) on Health Services in Tanzania.

Abstract

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) used in hospitals have well known advantages. They can promote patient-centred healthcare, improve quality of care, and educate health professionals and patients. However, the extent of the effects of implementing ICTs on health services in Tanzania remains little known thereby hindering the quality of service at different levels in the health sector. The purpose of the study was to investigate the extent of the effects of implementation of ICTs at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) in Dar es salaam Tanzania. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were adopted to address the research objectives. Data collection was done through the use of questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews where a total of 300 employees of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) were involved. The results indicate that majority of employees are aware of the different ICT facilities available at the hospital and the benefits arising from the use of ICT solutions.The study also shows that the use of ICTs has led to improvement of healthcare for patients, with daily routine being simplified, turn around time for sample processing improved, hospital data well organized and managed, as well as increased attendance and revenues. Furthermore, findings show that the use of ICT has contributed to increased security for various hospital operations at MNH. As a consequence of the study findings it is recommended that understanding of the requirements of ICT among healthcare stakeholders should be made a priority before embarking on implementation of ICT projects in hospitals.
