Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction Among Health Workers in Local Government Authorities at Dodoma City

Abstract

The study focused on factors influencing job satisfaction among health workers in Local Government Authorities in Dodoma City. It was centred on organizational culture, career development opportunities and working conditions as specific objectives. This research was built on Herzberg's Two-factor theory of motivation and a literature review to understand the study. A mixed approached was adopted during data collection and analysis. A cross-sectional design was employed to collect data from 230 respondents. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from primary and secondary sources using questionnaires, interviews and documentary reviews. Probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used to draw samples from a targeted population. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The reliability of variables was tested using Cronbach’s Alpha. The study findings revealed the health employees are dissatisfied with their jobs at 80.87% as a result of poor salaries, poor supervision, lack of opportunities for growth and lack of recognition for efforts. Organizationalculture, career development opportunities and working conditions were observed to havea significant influence on job satisfaction among health workers in Local Government Authorities in Dodoma City. The study recommends improvement of salaries, recognition for contribution, scholarship to facilitate career development, recruitment of health workers to reduce the burden of work overload, designing of a community fund to finance health service delivery and improving working conditions through the building of fences, renovations, provision of modern working tools as well as provision of clean water.
