Abstract

With an emphasis on the National Microfinance Bank as a case study, this paper explores how enterprise resource planning tools might improve the operational effectiveness and customer service of Tanzania's public sector banks. The study looks at the reasons for NMB's ERP adoption, the extent to which it was implemented across different banking departments and the effect it had on the bank's operational performance. A technique based on mixed approaches was used in the study to obtain a full understanding. To provide comprehensive qualitative insights into key stakeholders' experiences and perspectives of the ERP system, semi-structured interviews were conducted with IT personnel, branch managers, and tellers. Furthermore, a larger sample of NMB employees received questionnaires to objectively evaluate the perceived utility, usability, and general, and general ERP system satisfaction, using the Technology Acceptance Model as a guide. the results show that NMB's adoption of ERP was mainly motivated by the need to be up-to-date with technical improvements in the banking industry, as well as the anticipation of greater operational efficiency and increased return on investment. The analysis found that several operational areas had significant improvements when the ERP was implemented. Among them are: Shorter Transaction Processing Times: Automation has shortened transaction times for important banking operations including loan approvals and account openings. Improved Data Accuracy: The ERP system's centralization contributed to improved data consistency and accuracy between departments. Improved client Relationship Management: NMB was able to respond to client inquiries more quickly and offer more individualized services thanks to a centralized customer database. Employee and consumer satisfaction levels increased as a result of these favorable results. However, the study also notes difficulties that arose during the implementation stage. These include the requirement for thorough staff training, problems with interaction with current legacy systems, and early reluctance to change from some personnel. The study offers NMB useful suggestions to further optimize the advantages of its ERP system in light of these findings. These suggestions highlight Ongoing Staff Training Programs: emphasizing data analysis tools, cutting-edge ERP capabilities, and optimal system utilization techniques. Setting Up Systems for User Feedback: Put in place frequent feedback channels, such as focus groups and surveys, to assist NMB in identifying and resolving any lingering issues or potential ERP system enhancement areas. Integration with Mobile Banking: Considering Tanzania's strong mobile use rate, combining the ERP system and NMB's mobile banking platform might be integrated to improve operational effectiveness and customer convenience even more. This report offers insightful information about how ERP systems can revolutionize Tanzania's public sector banks. NMB Bank can maintain its leadership position in Tanzania's banking industry and set an example for other institutions looking to use technology to improve customer satisfaction and operational efficiency by resolving implementation issues and iteratively adjusting its ERP strategy.
