The impact of project management in urban transportation services

Abstract

This study assessed the impact of project management on urban transportation services in Tanzania, focusing on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Dar es Salaam. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, comprising descriptive research design, with a sample size of 400 participants. Data collection involved close-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated that effective risk management significantly enhances transportation service reliability, reduces traffic-related incidents, and improves passenger safety, with an overall mean score of 3.6. Training in risk management emerged as a critical factor. Additionally, a strong correlation (r = 0.905) highlighted the mportance of risk assessments in transportation project planning. The role of resource allocation was similarly emphasized, with a high mean score of 4.18, revealing that adequate resource allocation is vital for timely service and infrastructure maintenance. Correlation analysis showed a notable relationship between resource allocation and service delivery (r = 0.543). Stakeholder engagement, while recognized for its potential to improve decision-making (mean score of 3.9681), displayed unexpected negative correlations in its effectiveness on actual outcomes, suggesting complexities in operationalizing stakeholder input. In conclusion, effective risk management and resource allocation significantly improve urban transportation services, while stakeholder engagement requires more strategic integration to enhance its impact. Recommendations include implementing comprehensive risk management frameworks with regular staff training, enhancing stakeholder feedback mechanisms, and developing strategic budgeting and resource allocation processes.
