Feasibility of ICT Integration in Urban Public Secondary Schools in Tanzania.

Abstract

The major aim of this study is to examine the necessity of integrating ICT in process of learning in urban public secondary schools in Tanzania. Specifically the study was conducted under three specific objectives namely to examine the current status of ICT integration in urban public secondary schools, to determine capabilities offered by ICT in enhancing teaching and learning in urban public secondary schools and to identify the obstacles that hinders the integration of ICT in the process of teaching and learning in urban public secondary schools in Tanzania. Descriptive research design was adopted in this study to gather information from 75 teachers and 113 students of Temeke public secondary schools. The study findings revealed that the current status of ICT integration in urban public secondary schools is not good due to insufficient of ICT incentives and lack ICT training(s) which constitute to accessibility of poor knowledge and skills of ICT to both students and teachers. Also the effects of ICT to enhancing teaching and learning in secondary schools is not yet good hence teachers are not even often in the use of ICT tool, resources and facilities. Furthermore the study findings indicate that, internet connectivity and power outage are one of the factors hindering the integration of ICT in the process of teaching and learning in urban public secondary schools in Tanzania. The study recommend that; the government through the adminstration of ministry, region and district they might provide and ensure the accessibility of electricity and internet connectivity as initial resources of using and integrating ICT in public secondary schools.
