Abstract

This study examines the institutional factors and their influence on timely procurement of hospital supplies taking a case study of Benjamini Mkapa National Referral Hospital. The study aimed to assess the contribution of institutional factors to the timely procurement of hospital supplies in Tanzania. A cross-sectional research design was used to collect information from 104 employees. Both secondary and primary data were collected by the researcher, questionnaires and interviews were used to gather primary data, and document reviews were used to gather secondary data. Data were analyzed using multiple regressions to determine the hypothesized relationships between institutional factors and timely procurement of hospital supplies. The findings revealed that resource allocation, top management support, and staff competency are statistically significant factors in the timely procurement of hospital supplies. Findings indicate that there is effectiveness in resource allocation and utilization average of (p≤ 0.012) such as human resources, funds and budget that could be used on timely procurement of hospital supplies. Also, to analyze the relationship between top management support and collaboration with other staff and stakeholders average of (p≤ 0.000) on timely procurement of hospital supplies, as well as the contribution of staff skills, knowledge, and experience in procurement processes average of (p≤ 0.030) toward the timely procurement of hospital supplies, The researcher suggests that to increase the capacity on timely procurement of hospital supplies, training and workshops be given to procurement personnel and users. Then, the PMU should have an efficient public procurement system that enables suppliers to offer acceptable prices, quality, and services on time, as well as adhere to the legal and regulatory framework that governs public procurement.
