Assessment of Women's Participation in the Mineral Sector Industry.

Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the participation of women in the mineral sector industry in Tanzania, taking the Coastal regions as a case study. Specifically, the study was intended to examine the current roles of women's participation in the mineral sector industry; to identify challenges hindering women’s participation in the mineral sector industry; and to propose strategies to enhance women’s involvement in the mineral sector industry in Coastal regions of Tanzania. A case study research design was employed with 40 respondents who were randomly and purposively selected. An interview guide and questionnaire were used as data collecting tools. Data was analysed using both content and descriptive analysis. The study found that mineral processing, service provision, salt mining, pebble mining and mining license owning are among the roles played by women. Family commitment, social norms and cultural norms, patriarchal culture, sexual harassment and violence, and lack of access to finance are among the socio-cultural, economic, and institutional challenges that obstruct participation of women in the mineral sector industry. Education and skills training for women, addressing gender-based violence, prioritizing gender-inclusive legislation, community involvement and collaborations, microfinance initiatives are efficient strategies which can enhance women involvement in the mineral industry sector in Coastal regions of Tanzania. The study recommended that there is a need to implementing gender-inclusive mining regulations thereby enhancing women protections in occupational health and safety, risks, gender-inclusive mining regulations and policies, improving skills along with ensuring the presence in decision-making positions and developing services aimed tackling structural obstacles facing women through mentorship, adaptable work schedules, and equal pay.
