Improving Students’ Academic Performance Through online Learning

Abstract

This study investigates the viability of improving students’ academic performance through online learning using Makurumla Secondary School as a case study. This study employs the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) to lead the study of the implementation of an online learning system in secondary schools to improve the academic performance of the students with two specific objectives which are to identify key requirements for implementing an online learning system for students and in secondary schools, and to evaluate the effectiveness of different online teaching strategies in secondary schools. A mixed-methods approach was followed, whereby questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions were used for data collection. Quantitative data were processed by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and analyzed using descriptive data analysis and multiple regression analysis. While qualitative data from interviews and focus group discussions were analyzed through content analysis and MaxQDA qualitative data analysis. The reliability of data was tested by using the Cronbach's alpha test, whereby attaining a Cronbach's alpha of 0.7 or above confirms that the scale is dependable and valid for measuring the variables, allowing for accurate comparisons and meaningful conclusions from the data. The results showed that the majority of the students at Makurumla Secondary School are interested and have access to the online learning system at their homes, but the school infrastructure does not support implementing the online learning system. Based on requirements for introducing an online learning system to secondary schools, the study concluded that for the implementation of online learning in secondary schools, there should be sufficient and supportive infrastructures such as computers, a computer laboratory, stable electricity, and strong internet connectivity. The study states that the school ensures that students and teachers have access to digital devices, that there are strong and stable internet connections, and that teachers are properly trained to use the online learning system effectively.
