Creating Digitally Ready Secondary Schools’ Students in Tanzania.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to suggest ways on creating digitally ready secondary schools’ students in Tanzania. Specifically, the research attempted to work in the following objectives; (i) to evaluate the extent at which ICT skills and knowledge have been incorporated in current Teachers’ training curriculum, (ii) to examine challenges and opportunities of integrating ICT in current Teachers’ training curriculum and (iii) to assess policies governing ICT curricula development in Tanzania. Descriptive research design was employed in this study to collect information from 97 ADEM college students in Bagamoyo by using questionnaire and interview to teachers. The study findings revealed that student-teachers in Tanzania prefer to use laptop in updating their skills and knowledge about Information and Communication Technology. Also the study found that it’s an opportunity for the students to be confident especially with parents in the use of technology for communication and networking because parents are the agents of socialization they might involve through meetings to emphasize on the integration of ICT in the teaching curriculum. The study further indicted the importance of the following aspects (policies) in helping future teachers to increase integration of technology in their teaching; better access to technological equipment, reliability of equipment, availability of high quality equipment, educational ICT support, technological hands-on training, and dedicated time in courses to prepare exposure and develop. Then it’s recommended that, authorities should invest on emphasizing the importance of ICTs in learning process.
