Abstract

This study is an analysis of fishery supply chain at Ferry market in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The study has specifically, identified actors involved in fishery supply chain at Ferry market in Dar es Salaam city; determined actors activities involved at each stage in fishery supply chain at ferry market; assessed the challenges encountered by different actors in the Ferry market; and determined ways of coping with the challenges encountered by different actors in the Ferry market. This study employed a mixed research design by collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data within a single case study inquiry. The study used purposive sampling technique where a critical purposive sampling was engaged to get respondents whose size was 90. Data were collected using interviews where both close and open-ended questions were used; observation as the researcher took a physical visit to a study area to observe and record interested features as per study requirements, and Focus Group Discussions where 3 groups of 6 purposively selected participants were moderated. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using both SPSS v. 20 and Microsoft Excel data analysis packages. The study has revealed a number of findings relevant to fishery supply chain at the Ferry market, this include the actors involved in the fishery supply chain namely, the fishermen, agents, wholesalers, retailers, and the customers. The activities of each actor in the Ferry market fishery supply chain were identified, as well as the challenges overwhelming each actor has also been revealed. Eventually, the study has recommended a number of issues to enhance fishery supply chain at the area which include, development of different capacity building programs by the government and non-government organizations to empower fishery supply chain actors; reconsideration of the modalities used to charge various taxes to the actors; and formulation of policies which are all-encompassing that embody concerns of all stakeholders including actors in the supply chain.
