The Influence of Water Basin Financial Management Practices on Domestic Water Availability A Case of Pangani Basin Tanga Tanzania

Abstract

This study used the Pangani Basin in Tanga, Tanzania, as a case study to investigate the impact of water basin financial management practices on domestic water availability. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design with a mixed method research approach. There were 133 responders in the entire population. The study discovered that there is a positive and statistically insignificant relationship between financial planning and domestic water availability, with a p-value of greater than 5% (p˃0.05) indicating that every unit increase in financial planning led to a 0.042 increase in domestic water availability. Additionally, it was found that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between financial decision and control, with the former having a positive and statistically significant relationship with a p-value of less than 5% (p˂0.05) showing that a unit increase in financial planning led to a 0.326 increase in domestic water availability and the latter having a positive and statistically significant relationship with a 0.377 increase in domestic water availability. Regarding methods for resolving the issue of domestic water availability in Pangani, Tanga, Tanzania, the study identified the following approaches in relation to the fourth objective: empowering water users' associations, deploying sufficient human resources in the water sector, adopting modern technology for water management, and teaching the community about the importance of conserving water sources. During specific dry season periods, it is advised that Pangani Basin Water Institute establish water reserves for domestic and livestock use. It has been suggested that more comparable studies be conducted in Tanzanian and other river basins.
