Abstract

This study aimed to measure the effects of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on the performance of banks in Tanzania, focusing on specific financial metrics before and after the merger of NIC Bank and CBA Bank into NCBA Bank. The specific objectives included assessing the influence of capital base changes, analyzing shifts in asset quality, and evaluating liquidity ratio variations on financial performance post-M&A. Methodologically, a quantitative approach was employed, utilizing secondary data from financial statements spanning ten years (five years pre-M&A (2014-2018) and five years post-M&A (2019-2023)). Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression, were conducted to explore relationships among variables such as Return on Assets (ROA), Total Assets, and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR). The results indicated that pre-merger, neither NIC Bank nor CBA Bank demonstrated significant correlations between ROA and financial metrics, suggesting limited individual effects on profitability. Post-merger, NCBA Bank showed improvements in ROA with moderate positive correlations between ROA and CAR, although Total Assets had minimal influence. The study concluded that while M&A can enhance financial stability and operational efficiencies, the effects on specific financial metrics varies, necessitating tailored strategies for optimizing post-merger performance. Recommendations include enriching academic knowledge through broader datasets and metrics, prioritizing liquidity and capital strategies for sustained post-M&A stability, and guiding policymakers to formulate adaptive regulations supporting sector resilience and economic stability. By addressing these gaps, stakeholders can better understand and leverage M&A as a tool for fostering sustainable growth and competitive advantage in king industry.
