Abstract

Transport is very crucial for economic development of any nation because the industry has a significant effect on the economic growth and development of a nation and major investments are channeled through the industry. This study seeks to assess the business environment on investment in dala dala transport in Mwanza City, Tanzania. The specific objectives are to describe administrative steps in making investment in dala dala transport in Mwanza, to describe the institutions involved in making investment in dala dala transport in Mwanza, to analyze the accessibility to finance for investment in dala dala transport in Mwanza. The study adopted a descriptive case study design. The targeted population for this study was the owners of the dala dala transport in Mwanza City. Using convenience sampling, a sample size of 86 respondents was selected to respond to the questionnaires for primary data collection. Data were presented using statistical parameters such as percentages and frequencies. The study findings revealed that the urban transport in Mwanza city was still dominated by private individual investors with used mini buses of carrying capacity of 16 passengers. All these mini buses are purchased from Japan. It was also discovered that there are more than one government agencies which are involved. The majority of the owners had limited access to finance such that they depend on personal financing.
