Abstract

This study's primary objectives were to assess the factors influencing the growth and development of the second-hand clothes business in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and to suggest solution for doing so. The specific objectives were to assess the government influence on the growth and development of second-hand clothes business, find out challenges facing entrepreneurs in the growth and development of second-hand clothes business and recommend solutions for improving the growth and development of second hand clothes business. Using a qualitative methodology, data from a sample of 80 respondents was gathered through in-depth interviews, document reviews, focus groups, and open-ended questionnaires. The analysis of qualitative results used content analysis. Major government influences that affecting the growth and development of second-hand clothes business were ascertained notably, present of Business License Act as well as Tanzania Bureaus of Standard Act of 2009 that positive supporting the growth of the business. Consequently, problems that prevent entrepreneurs for the growth and development of second-hand clothes business were in four categories notably selection of business location, inadequate purchasing and selling of clothes, improper handling and distribution as well as failure to abide with standard and quality. To improve second hand clothes business, entrepreneurs should ensure right location of business, allocation of sufficient budget, mobilizing with source of finance for buying second hand clothes as well as relevant tax minimization strategies to the entrepreneurs. Government authorities should devise with effective management and policies to smooth the growth and development of second-hand clothes business.
