Abstract
Tanzania is facing disparity in asset ownership among women and men. This study, examined the gender
gap that still exist in asset ownership and its associated factors. Land is used to measure the level of asset
ownership. Seven (07) current papers (2017-2021) related to the study were reviewed to establish factors
causing gender gap in asset ownership. The findings show that there still exists gender gap in asset
ownership. Using Land as a measure of asset ownership the following factors are the source of ownership
gap; lack of knowledge and awareness Lack of income and Traditions & customary norms are the most
critical factors limiting women from owning assets in Tanzania. The study recommends awareness should
be availed to women regarding their rights to own and use assets, families to be educated on the importance
of letting women own assets like land and economic empowerment of women should be encouraged.
