Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the challenges facing people with disabilities in acquiring equitable employment in small and medium enterprises in the urban context. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study employed mixed methods research design and data were collected using a questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. Quantitative and qualitative data were analysed using SPSS, and MAXQDA software respectively. Findings: Findings show that challenges facing people with disabilities in acquiring equitable employment in urban-based small and medium enterprises include a lack of awareness about job opportunities and labour laws, negative perception by the Community, stigma by employers and employees, financial constraints that limit them to apply for jobs, poor job application skills among others. Implications/Research Limitation: This study focuses on urban settings notably Dar as Salaam owing to the heterogeneous nature of SMEs and employment opportunities. However, generalization of findings to another urban setting may not be possible. Practical Implication: The study recommends improvement of policy-related labour policies and more especially equitable employment for disabled people. It is also a good source of policy advocacy material on equal employment in Tanzania. Originality/Value: This study addresses the problem of stigma to equal employment of people with disability. The study recommends that relevant stakeholders should promote equal employment opportunities for both abled and disabled people.
